North Cowichan sends right-of-centre councillors packing, votes in more progressive candidates

Issues included rubber stamping of developments, failure to listen to the public, forest protection

North Cowichan voters sent a strong message in the Saturday election, defeating all four right-of-centre councillors, who held the majority vote on council, and electing more progressive candidates.

Bruce Findlay, Tek Manhas, Mike Caljouw and Becky Hogg all lost in the wake of public discontent over issues such as rubber stamping of development applications and failure to listen to residents, including on the results of a consultation process supporting conservation management of the Municipal Forest Reserve.

Rob Douglas was elected mayor for a second four-year term, easily beating newcomer Chris Wilkinson.

Six councillors were elected, including incumbents Christopher Justice and Chris Istace as well as four newcomers —  Don Allingham, Krystal Adams, Valerie Russell and Derek Masselink.
