Cowichan Valley waterfalls most spectacular after heavy rains

Tofino has its storm watching.

But when it comes to nature at its most dramatic, the Cowichan Valley has something equally exciting — waterfalls fuelled by heavy rain.

Waterfalls are a popular destination year round, but are best viewed after several days of steady downpour.

And the Cowichan Valley has some impressive waterfalls, including Christie Falls on Bush Creek north of Ladysmith and both upper and lower Banon Creek falls west of Chemainus.

(Upper Banon Creek Falls)

They’re free, close by, and guaranteed to thrill you.

Lower Banon Creek Falls offers easy and safe access. Park at the far end of Grace Road, walk down to the Chemainus River, then proceed a short distance upstream.

You can also drive to Skutz Falls on the upper Cowichan River near Lake Cowichan.

If you visit, be sure to stay well away from the shoreline, including slippery ledges and bluffs, and keep your dog on a leash.

(Note that while Robertson River Falls is a popular destination near Mesachie Lake, it is located on Mosaic private lands.)
