Salmon watching is a popular activity during the annual spawning migration
The annual return of salmon to their natal streams in the Cowichan Valley inevitably spawns a second migration — people looking to witness one of nature’s great spectacles.
Question is: where to go?
A few days ago I drove up to Skutz Falls on the Cowichan River in hopes of seeing some activity. Standing near the top of the concrete fish ladders I saw nothing swimming in the water.
Then I spotted a couple of photographers with long camera lenses positioned at the base of the falls. Turns out that was the best spot to photograph the salmon leaping upstream.
One of those photographers, Doug Koke, suggested I also try my luck at Holland Creek in Ladysmith, where the waters are calmer and you stand a good chance of watching the spawning process.
I went twice to Holland Creek — the first time observing no salmon, and the second time finding several in the creek further downstream.

The difference is that I checked with locals who had more accurate information on when and where spawning might be witnessed.
I parked in the parking lot next to the Dogwood Drive bridge, crossed the road, then walked down to the creek and continued downstream towards the Trans Canada Highway.

Holland Creek Trail is a lovely forested walk at any time of the year; the presence of spawning salmon in autumn is an added bonus.
Note also that if you don't mind the crowds, Goldstream Provincial Park, northwest of Victoria, is a reliable place to find spawning salmon.

Here are a few recommendations for anyone planning to visit a salmon spawning stream:
— Stay out of the water. That applies to your dog, too, which should be on a leash.
— Approach quietly and wear more neutral clothes. Stay back from fast-rushing waters.
— Polarizing lenses help to reduce the glare and better view the salmon.
